Day Three is the most strenuous day. Starting at Pinto Lake at 8700' elevation, we climb to Black Rock Pass at 11700' elevation before descending to our campsite at one of the Little Five Lakes at an elevation of 10480'. To the untrained eye, this looks like Eli preparing to descend the pass to our third campsite next to one of the lakes. The story behind this picture is that moments before, he was quite ill from either altitude sickness or overexertion as he literally charged up the 3000+ feet of altitude gain. He felt so much better afterward that he slapped his pack on again and took off.

Arriving at one of the Lower Big Five lakes, the boys enjoy jokes and lunch. It must've been a good joke as even Mike is caught smiling Eager to have a day without hiking, they decide to skip camping here and move on in order to have a layover day later on.

2004:08:11 18:20:29
Bloody Noses: Perhaps an inevitable result of a hike such as this. At 9560' elevation this was high enough for Bobby. His brother, Matt, had a bloody nose at the Pinto Lake campsite which started up again here when he fell on his face chasing a Mountain Gartersnake.

2004:08:12 07:16:34
At dinner, we found out that this was a work crew camp for the Forest Service when a supply train of mules arrived. The crew graciously allowed us to stay as long as we left early the next morning. Here the boys take advantage of an early morning fire started by the work crew to heat up a can of water for cleaning. Temperatures at sunrise were typically 42º.

The fifth day's hike (Thursday) took us up alongside the stream through a wooded area that opened up into this meadow. Sawtooth Peak, elevation 12,343 feet is in the background. The trail proceeds up the hill to the rear to Columbine Lake.

Cresting the rise, our campsite comes into view. This site resembles Joshua Tree at 11,040 feet with a Lake and without the trees. As you see, I was far enough behind that the boys had camp set up by the time I got there.

The lake featured a rock roughly 30' out of the water that was beside an extremely deep section of the lake. Everyone took at least one turn at jumping from the rock except yours truly. Lake temperature was 62º at the surface but colder below. Here Mike takes a turn.

If you couldn't find Steve, there was a good chance he was relaxing in some shady spot adding to his trip journal. His journal from the previous trip was handy to determine how much time to allow to get back to the cars.

From 3:00 until 7:00 PM, there had been continuous rain and thunder to the North where we had just been the first three days. As sunset arrived, the clouds dissipated and I was left with this impressive view looking out the front of my tent. The actual purple color doesn't come out well on this picture.
